joint letter to President Trump of America, President Macron of
France and Prime Minister Marc Rutte of the Netherlands, asked for
international attention because of major irregularities and many
fraud reports during the Surinamese elections that were held on May
Citizens in Suriname and in the diaspora are extremely concerned with the integrity and fairness of how the Surinamese elections on 25 May 2020 were conducted and the reliability of the results. In the preparation and during the elections, developments that “red flag” indications of fraudulent actions kept occurring. Several analysts and political organizations warned about this.
Sprinkle money from helicopters, bribery indicator
According to the citizens, the ruling party violated Article 164 of the Surinamese Penal Code, which prohibits bribery of voters. This is done by, among other things, spreading cash from helicopters in villages and also from campaign buses.
“We have seen the following issues pass by: worrying irregularities with regard to heavily polluted voter lists, destruction of 200,000 ballot papers, informal reporting of bribery and threats to voters, and recently the controversial presidential resolution that allows arbitrariness and abuse.
These are all indicators that frustrate fair elections, in fact, a fair election result. ”
All in all, enough indicators, which raise great concern among the citizens in Suriname and in the diaspora, that these elections were not conducted in a fair manner. For this reason, a group of troubled citizens in Suriname and in the diaspora have drawn up and sent an international emergency letter (see appendix) to various country leaders and international organizations, to draw attention to the fraud warning signals from Suriname that point to possible fraud from the alleged government and the ruling party the NDP.
